Artist Spotlight

A strong warrior from a strong artist.

Though injured, Mulan looks determined as ever to save her country. Jared Mathews is the one responsible for bringing this moving moment to fruition. Learn more about him below.

Welcome, Jared. What Disney character are you most like?

Jared: If you mixed the red-bearded Oaken from Frozen, Baloo with his laid-back fun uncle vibes, and some of Ferb from Phineas and Ferb, that would be me.

What other characters do you enjoying drawing?

Jared: Yzma is super fun to draw!  Her design is just so insane and funny to me.  Like have you seen her hips?  They are crazy bony; like a skeleton. If I get the chance to draw her and Kronk in the same card, that'd be peak awesomeness!

How long does it take you to get to final artwork?

Jared: It can take usually around a month. A lot of that time is spent drawing and redrawing the character until I get the pose and emotion to hit just right. Once that is done, the coloring and all that is just that sweet icing on the cake.

How do you go about studying the movement/posing/anatomy of a character before you start sketching?

Jared: I keep a sketchbook dedicated to practicing drawing the characters I'm assigned to. So, if I'm going to work on a Mulan card, I'll usually take a whole day and draw from the movie or concept art so that I'm ready to go work on the Lorcana card the next morning.

Where can people find you on social media?

Jared: You can find me on Instagram @jmathews20
