A Haunting New Deck

Whispers in the Well brought Disney Lorcana fans a few new franchises to enjoy. While players were excitedly expecting Gargoyles and The Black Cauldron, we all had a spook-tacular surprise with the introduction of Sleepy Hollow glimmers into the game.

In the 1949 animated film, The Adventures of Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad, Disney brought to life the story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman, based on Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

And now Disney Lorcana brings new glimmers to life with exciting abilities and incredible artwork by card illustrators.

To celebrate the addition of these new glimmers, I wanted to create a theme deck centered around them that would be fun for a night of social play!

I call this Ruby and Steel deck: Sleepy Hollow Haunting. The Headless Horseman and other Sleepy Hollow friends are joined by more glimmers from Whispers in the Well and beyond to make this fa-BOO-lous deck!

Starting off with our central glimmer to this deck, we have three different Headless Horseman glimmers. The Headless Horseman – Relentless Spirit is a nice Bodyguard to protect other small characters such as Diablo – Watchful Raven. The Headless Horseman – Cursed Rider is an 8 cost character, but with Shift 5 can be played a bit earlier to disrupt your opponent. Although it does allow each player to draw three cards, the ability to do extra damage to an opposing character is really great, while also leaving you with a big character on board who quests for two.

And finally, the Legendary Headless Horseman – Terror of Sleepy Hollow is a fantastic card. This glimmer has a wonderful on play ability, Leaves No Trace, which allows you to banish an opposing character with 2 strength or less.

Ghostly Tale is an action card with the ability to exert all opposing characters with 2 or less. This will allow you to challenge with some high strength characters in the deck like Brom Bones – Burly Bully, Katrina Van Tassel – Rosy-Cheeked Lass, or even Hermes – Harried Messenger who has Rush. With Lumiere – Fiery Friend on the table, all your other characters will have additional strength making challenges more favorable for you as well. Brom Bones will also cause your opponent to lose lore if he challenges a character with 2 or less strength.

I love the Sleepy Hollow location and the synergy with the action card Get to Safety. When a character quests at Sleepy Hollow – The Bridge, you may banish the location card to gain 2 lore and that character gains Evasive until the start of your next turn. You may wonder why you would want to banish Sleepy Hollow—but you can bring it back with Get to Safety! With this action you can play Sleepy Hollow from your discard for free and then draw a card. Such fun flavor and a fun combo!

To round out the deck I added Strength of a Raging Fire to help banish opposing characters. I also added in four copies of Doc – Bold Knight and two copies of Desperate Plan to help with additional card draw. When playing this deck you would want to play out characters on curve (which means you play a 1 cost character turn 1, 2 cost character turn 2, etc), until you run out of cards. Then use Doc or Desperate Plan to refill your hand as the game goes on.

Perfect for a spooky theme night at your locals or a fun evening playing kitchen table games with friends and family, this Sleepy Hollow Haunting deck is sure to give ‘em pumpkin to talk about!
