CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT – WHISPERS IN THE WELL ARTWORKS

October 23, 2025

Talking art with Ravensburger Creative Manager, Edgar Pasten

Iconic and Enchanted cards are two of the rarest types of cards in Disney Lorcana. These cards have unique styles based on the set they’re released in. This set also sees a new type of glimmer, Whispers, bringing a unique new look for some classic Disney characters. We check in with Creative Manager Edgar Pasten, the Whispers in the Well Art Lead, to get some insight into the artwork from this latest set.

Question: Each set has had distinct art styles based on their respective set. How would you describe the look and feel of the Enchanted cards for Whispers in the Well?

Edgar: The Enchanted cards in this set rely on dramatic lighting, like that of a fireside gathering, to place the viewer in the mysterious caverns of the Illuminary. To that end, we used “single source lighting” to compose an eerie contrast between each character and its implied environment, giving the viewer a sense of focus and helplessness, in that they, too, are in the dark.

Question: This is the second set featuring Iconic cards, do you have anything you want to share about the direction on these new Iconics?

Edgar: Only that Iconic cards are gorgeous, and I love that we can share more beautiful art with the world in this way!

Question: Whispers have this ethereal type of presence, was there a character you were particularly excited to give this new appearance?

Edgar: I was most excited by the challenge that Beast - Aggressive Lord brought with it. This is Beast in a very aggressive pose, showing off his magical Ruby essence, brandishing a piece of rubble. It's an exciting card, and it shows off Juan Diego Leon's amazing work.

Question: We just learned that Sleepy Hollow is joining in Whispers in the Well. What was it like bringing the classic Headless Horseman to Disney Lorcana?

Edgar: I’m partial to the edgier characters; they really help bring out the fun, spooky vibes we were aiming for, with the moody lighting of this set. It’s hard to pick any single card, but I think the ones with the Headless Horseman are fantastic. For instance, Gregorzs Krizinski’s “Spooky Sight”; it’s a moment where the Headless Horseman catches up to the ghost exterminator trio of Mickey, Goofy, and Donald, and it is nothing short of spectacular. Balancing the hard-edge scariness of the Headless Horseman, with the humor we all know and associate with Mickey Mouse and his friends. Counter that, with the ominous Headless Horseman art Rubin Chung created for The Headless Horseman - Terror of Sleepy Hollow, Where the Horseman and his horse peer into your soul, it’s genuinely bone-chilling!

Question: Anything else you'd like to share about working on Whispers in the Well artwork?

Edgar: In a set where every card is a piece of a greater puzzle, I invite the fans to join the detective characters in unraveling the mystery behind our elusive Whisper glimmers!
