You don’t need a voice like Ariel to sing in Disney Lorcana! All you need is enough ink or a character (or a few!) to play one of the many song cards in the game. Let’s talk about what a song card is, how to play it, and take a look at some of my favorite songs in the game.

First up: What is a song card?

In Disney Lorcana there are four types of cards in the game: characters, actions, items, and locations.

But wait - none of those are songs!

Well, a song card is actually a type of action card.

Actions are cards which are played on your turn and have some kind of effect which you’ll carry out and then place the Action card into your discard pile. To play an Action, you need enough Ink in your Inkwell to pay the cost of the Action.

A song is a special type of Action which allows you to play the card two different ways:

  • Use your Ink to pay the cost, OR

  • Use one of your Characters with a cost equal or higher to the cost of the Song and exert them to sing (or play) the song for free.

Not only can one character sing, but there are some songs in Disney Lorcana with the ability Sing Together. Sing Together cards let you use any number of characters with total cost equal or higher to the song’s cost.

The ability to sing a song is amazing because it allows you to use characters you have in play by exerting them to play a card for free. When you do this, you can use your Ink to play another character or another card from your hand to help you keep ahead of your opponent and, hopefully, win the game!

You can use songs to increase or decrease characters’ strength, draw cards, give characters Rush or Evasive, or even gain lore! While it’s hard to pick a favorite Disney Lorcana song, here are a few I especially enjoy.

Favorite Art

When it comes to artwork, Seldom All They Seem is absolutely my favorite. This sapphire song with art by Ravensburger artist, Rachele Elese is stunning. The entire piece evokes the style from the Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, but my favorite part is the reflection. Above the water we see Briar Rose dancing with Owl and friends, but in the water we see an image of Aurora in a ball gown dancing with Prince Philip reflecting back at us.

I love the art, and while this card rotated out of Core Constructed with Fabled, I still look at how I can use it in Infinity format.

Favorite On Theme Flavor

Disney Lorcana fans have been incredibly excited about the introduction of glimmers based on Disney’s A Goofy Movie. One new card in Fabled is the emerald song, Stand Out. We see Max swinging above the crowd, and the effect gives a chosen character +3 Strength and Evasive until your next turn. From the art to the song effect, the flavor of this card definitely stands out.

Favorite Effect

When it comes to powerful effects, Strength of a Raging Fire is one of the best cards in Disney Lorcana. This inkable three-cost Steel song can be found in many competitive decks for a reason. The ability to flood your board with characters and then deal damage to an opposing character equal to the number of characters you have in play is very strong. The only drawback is to make sure you have enough characters in play to make the most of the effect.

Favorite Overall

With vibrant art, great flavor, and a powerful effect, Under the Sea is the song card that is an overall favorite not just for me, but many players! This is a Sing Together song, which makes sense since it’s a chorus of crustaceans and sea creatures who sing this in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The art by Ravensburger artist, Dylan Bonner perfectly captures the moment, while the ability to send opposing characters to the bottom of their players’ decks is an effect any player would appreciate - unless, of course, it’s your characters who are being sent under the sea.

Songs are very powerful and have some amazing effects. Whether you want a song on theme for a fun casual deck or with a powerful effect for a competitive event, there’s a song for you!
