Learn more about the artwork in the latest set
Each set, the Enchanted cards, the rarest type of card in Disney Lorcana, are some of the most discussed and sought after cards by collectors, and are now joined by Iconic cards! These cards have unique styles based on the set they’re released in. Let’s check in with the Creative Director for Illustration and Fabled Art Lead, Matthew Eng, to get some insight on this set’s style.
Question: Each set has had distinct art styles based on their respective set. How would you describe the look and feel of the Enchanted cards for Fabled?
Matt: Since Fabled is a return to the Great Illuminary and the classic look of Disney Lorcana, we went back to our established Modern Storybook art style for the Enchanted cards similar to what was seen in The First Chapter. We’re always trying to make the art on the Enchanted cards a little more dramatic and exciting than the regular cards through action, pose, and lighting.
Question: Iconic cards are a new type even rarer than Enchanted. Could you explain how that changes things for art direction? What are some differences?
Matt: Because Iconic cards are the rarest cards in the set and so highly collectible, we pay great attention to the character and artwork. The art should capture the nostalgia Disney fans have for the character and depict them in a very iconic way.
Question: What was it like getting to go back and give some fan favorites an Enchanted card?
Matt: The fan favorites are also some of our favorites! Enchanted cards are a great way to honor these iconic glimmers, so I’m excited we were able to give some of the returning cards an Enchanted version. Cards like Mickey Mouse -Steamboat Pilot and Winnie the Pooh – Hunny Wizard are exciting also because they’re originally common rarity!
Question: Anything else you'd like to share about Fabled artwork?
Matt: Our artists for Fabled really knocked it out of the park. We were able to work with amazingly talented artists who have been so integral to what we want to deliver to our audience. I think longtime fans are going to enjoy the return to the roots of Lorcana in these new and exciting visuals!
