New Multiplayer Format Open Beta

New Multiplayer Format Open Beta

July 28, 2026

Check out [Format Coconut] at Gen Con

Hello, Illumineers! I’m Ryan Miller, co-creator of the Disney Lorcana TCG and Director of Play and Product, and I have a big announcement about Disney Lorcana.

From the beginning, co-designer Steve Warner and I imagined how much fun it would be for groups to play the game together, and folks have enjoyed being able to play with more than 2 players using the basic multiplayer rules. Now we want to step it up!

The Ravensburger Game Design team has been cooking up an exciting new multiplayer format we’ve codenamed [Format Coconut]. Here’s what we’re hoping to do with this new format:

  • Create a friendly environment for new players to jump right into. It can be intimidating to try a new game, but having friends along helps a lot. We want to give groups a way to play together without the pressure of facing off one-on-one.

  • Make it easier to build decks with strong deckbuilding direction. The open-endedness of building competitive decks can leave any level of player feeling overwhelmed with the possibilities. We want to make it easier for everyone to build fun decks they’ll enjoy playing together.

  • Build on the game’s replayability. We want to deepen the game experience. To give you more room to explore, we’re offering players new deck archetypes. And to help keep your decks exciting, we’re focusing on deckbuilding with only a single copy of each card permitted (sometimes called “singleton,” more on that in a bit). This way, games play out differently every time—even with the same deck matchups—because you never know what combination of cards you’re going to draw.

We’re excited to do something that we’ve never done before: an open beta test!

We want to partner with you, the fans of the Disney Lorcana TCG, to make [Format Coconut] something special. That’s why we’re not officially launching it right now but rather taking this opportunity to get feedback from the community on the format, both on the individual [Coconut] card designs and on possible future [Coconut] cards.

What Exactly Is [Format Coconut]?

At its core, [Format Coconut] is a new way to build decks around one special, spotlighted character card. Here’s a summary, but you can see the beta test rules here and a list of some the first [Coconut] cards we’re exploring with this first beta test here. At its core, [Format Coconut] is a new way to build decks around one special, spotlighted character card.

  • First, choose a [Coconut] card from this list. Each one has special abilities to use as inspiration for building your deck.

  • Next, choose up to three ink types. [Coconut] cards unlock the possibility of having a third ink type in your deck, but one of them has to be the same as your [Coconut] card’s.

  • Then, build a deck around your [Coconut] card and chosen ink types using at least 60 cards. Your deck can have up to 4 copies of the character card associated with your [Coconut] card. The rest of your cards are limited to 1 copy of each.

Gameplay follows the normal multiplayer Disney Lorcana rules except that you play to 25 lore.

We expect [Format Coconut] will work best with 3 or 4 players, but if you want to try out games with more, we’d love to hear how they go.

Get Involved in the Open Beta Test

Hello, everyone! My name is Lukas Litzsinger, and I’m a Game Design Manager for Disney Lorcana. We’re excited about [Format Coconut] and can’t wait to see what you think of it after you play a few (dozen) games!

We’ve already tested the format in China as well as at Disney Lorcana Challenge Indianapolis behind closed doors, and we’ve received a bunch of positive responses. Now we’re ready to move forward with a larger test. Here’s how you can get involved.

1. Gen Con

If you’re going to be at Gen Con (starting on July 30!), you’ll see two ways you can be part of this beta test. We’ll have “Dev Tables” where you can walk up and try the format with our pre-constructed decks, and we’ll have [Format Coconut] Social Hour events. At the social hours, we can match you with other players, and you can play with our decks or bring your own (matching the deckbuilding guidelines above, of course). For more information, check out the list of events here.

2. Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game Companion App

You don’t have to attend an event to be part of the beta test of [Format Coconut]! Starting July 28, 2026, you can access [Format Coconut] info in the Disney Lorcana TCG Companion app. It’s a great way to check out our current [Coconut] cards and easily reference their abilities. Of course, you can also use our handy digital lore counter. Get some friends together, try it out, and have fun!

3. gamescom

If you’re attending gamescom in Cologne (August 26 through August 30) we’ll have two tables, where you can try the [Format Coconut] with our pre-constructed decks or your own decks. Ravensburger game designers will be on hand, explaining the format, and gathering feedback.

Let Us Know What You Think

While the [Format Coconut] beta is underway, we want to have an open dialogue about it with you, our players. We’ve created a dedicated [Format Coconut] channel in our Discord, where Ryan and I, along with other devs, will be chatting with the community about the format. Each week, we’ll also post a new [Coconut] card we’re working on so that players can test it out and give us feedback.

Not in our Discord? You can join here.

We’ve launched a survey for anyone who’s tried the format. Once you play, please take a moment to fill it out and share your thoughts with us here.

This is just the beginning. As we go through your feedback, we’ll continue to adjust the current [Coconut] cards to be even more fun and balanced. And we’re working on more cards already, so let us know what cards you’d love to see in [Format Coconut]. Someday we might even get physical copies of [Coconut] cards into your hands.

Be sure to tune into future Weekly Lorecasts at twitch.tv/DisneyLorcana every Thursday at 10 a.m. PT for updates on how the open beta test of [Format Coconut] is going.

Welcome to the future of [Format Coconut]. We hope you have as much fun playing it as we’re having!
