Talking art with Ravensburger Senior Art Director Mike Vaillancourt

Iconic and Enchanted cards are two of the rarest types of cards in Disney Lorcana TCG. These cards have unique styles based on the set they’re released in. Attack of the Vine! sees our Illumineers and their glimmers teaming up to take on an invasive threat spreading across the realm of Lorcana. We check in with Senior Art Director, Mike Vaillancourt, Attack of the Vine! Art Lead, to get some insight into the artwork from this latest set.

Question: Each set’s Enchanted and Iconic cards have had distinct art styles based on their respective set. In Attack of the Vine! we introduce a style we call Cinemagic. How would you describe this look and feel?

Mike: The primary inspiration came from old pulp movie posters from the ’60s up through the ’80s, drawing inspiration from several of my favorite poster artists throughout those eras. For a set where a giant vine coursing with ink energy is wantonly destroying the realm, it seemed fitting to lean into the pulp feel!

Question: Most of the character cards in Disney Lorcana feature a single character, but with all of the Team cards in the set, you were able to depict pairs and even groups on character cards. Were there any you were particularly excited about?

Mike: SO MANY! Buzz Lightyear and Woody, Carl and Russell, 4-Town, Sulley and Boo, Mei and her besties, Darkwing Duck and Launchpad, Rapunzel and Flynn, Lilo and Stitch, the Madrigal Family, Hunny Archmage Pooh and Hunny Mage Apprentice Piglet . . . there are soooo many!

Question: This set features new Pixar characters for the first time from Monsters Inc., Up, and Turning Red, each of which have very distinct visual styles for the characters. What was it like incorporating these new characters while making them feel like they belong alongside other Disney characters?

Mike: Being able to incorporate those characters in Disney Lorcana, even if they’re encountering a particularly perilous event, was a blast! One of my favorite characters is Dug from Up. In his card, we were able to capture his oblivious nature despite vines creeping in around him. It’s such a fun card!!!

Question: Anything else you’d like to share about working on Attack of the Vine! artwork?

Mike: I’m excited for folks to see the Created by the Vine glimmers. They’re grown copies of glimmers but made of plantlike material, and they can be a little fun and a little creepy at the same time, depending on how you see them. I’m excited for folks to see both them and the Lorcana specific critters that were created specifically for Attack of the Vine! and Illumineers Quest: The Great Hunny Rescue.
