Iconic and Enchanted cards are two of the rarest types of cards in Disney Lorcana TCG. These cards have unique styles based on the set in which they’re released. Wilds Unknown sends our Illumineers and their glimmers into various unseen corners of Lorcana as they try to make their way back home. Checking in with Senior Art Director, Anna Stosik, the Wilds Unknown Art Lead, we got some behind-the-scenes insight into the artwork from this latest set.
Question: Each set’s Enchanted and Iconic cards have had distinct art styles based on their respective set. How would you describe the look and feel of the Enchanted and Iconic cards for Wilds Unknown?
Anna: In Wilds Unknown, the glimmers are stuck in the wilderness, and we also have the huge vine looming over the landscapes. Nature is such a strong force in the set, so we wanted to have a more organic approach that would allow us to incorporate the plant motifs in the Enchanted art style. We got some inspiration from a famously organic Art Nouveau style, but were aiming to develop a fresh, Disney Lorcana take on it. I love how unexpected some of the cards are!
Question: What was it like bringing Pixar Animation Studios stories into Disney Lorcana TCG for the first time? Were there any Pixar characters in Wilds Unknown you were particularly excited about?
Anna: I think we were all excited to start working on Pixar characters. Toy Story was definitely a big deal for the art directors and artists. It was certainly one of the films that marked many of our childhoods—I remember hoping my toys would come to life when I wasn't looking! It was really special to work with Pixar to explore these characters in new, exciting adventures.
Question: We see characters separated in vastly different settings in this set. How did you make sure that they felt like they look like they belong to the same set while keeping the locations depicted in the artwork distinct?
Anna: That’s a great question! Many people are involved in making each card. My role is to establish the visual themes for the set and to work with the amazing artists who contribute to Disney Lorcana and with Ravensburger’s Worldbuilding Art Director (Erik van Horn) to develop concept art and rules to follow. For Wilds Unknown, we developed three distinct locations with different palettes and qualities, but similar value ranges—they are also normally depicted during the day. We also developed the look of the vine and its treacherous flowers, that would be seen in most of the cards too. Those concepts were then provided to our team of Card Art directors, who work with the artists on each individual artworks. Everyone did amazing work here, so I can only say that making sure a set feels like a set is a long, collaborative process
Question: Anything else you’d like to share about working on Wilds Unknown artwork?
Anna: I think it’s a super exciting set! We meet new characters and familiar ones in entirely new roles. The Enchanted and Iconic cards are absolutely stunning, and we have a bunch of fun panoramas, which I personally love 😊. I hope the players and collectors will enjoy it too!
