Like classic enchanted fairytales, French Carlomagno enchants us with his ravishing card art. Hear what he has to say about his experience in the realm of Lorcana.
This is your first time creating a card for Disney Lorcana. Tell us about the experience.
French: It's emotional for me to finally get to work on these iconic characters that I grew up with. And I’m very happy to say that it won't be the last time, either!
What Disney character are you most like?
French: That's a really tough question. There isn't just one, but for sure my favorites in absolutely random order are Robin Hood, Alice, Wart, Kuzco, and I could go on and on!
How long does it take you to get to final artwork?
French: It depends on the card as not all of them have the same production time. From the initial layout to the finished illustration, it can take a few actual days of work, but it's a team effort where we have to wait for feedback and work side by side with the art directors, so it can also take a few weeks.
How do you go about studying the movement/posing/anatomy of a character before you start sketching?
French: I try to gather as many references as possible beyond those provided to me, and then I look over and over at movie frames to understand how that character acts and try to capture its essence in the card.
