Case File #4 - Whispers

27 October 2025

What are they? Where do they come from?

At the heart of this mystery lies…well, these…

They are truly peculiar in nature. Not quite ghostly and not quite a phantom. Upon closer observation (that is, if you can get close to one), you can tell portions of these glimmers are not “fully formed.” It appears you could run your hand or a magnifying glass right through them.

Theory: these are not spirits nor ghouls, but something entirely unique to this realm.

UPDATE:

After trailing a few of these apparitions, it’s now clear that the best name for these types of glimmers is Whisper. Why? They possess similar traits to their corporeal counterpart, but they are just an echo of it. This is not to say they are weak, but there seems to be something missing.

The question remains: How did they come to be? Searching for more clues should lead to an answer.

FIELD NOTES

  • Attempted to retrace the path of a few Whispers
  • Discovered ripped and torn lorebook pages in a small glen
  • These damaged pages sported faint silhouettes of the same Whispers seen floating about the caverns

THEORY–Whispers will manifest new abilities if their loreBook page is repaired or boosted in some way…perhaps by magic ink?

Theory confirmed! By combining a Whisper with whole, untorn pages of one’s lorebook, the additional magic ink does indeed allow them to gain new and exciting powers. It’s a sight to behold, honestly. At first, one might think to avoid these somewhat eerie specters, but the evidence counters this. It’s an exciting discovery for the realm that warrants further study.

BONUS UPDATE: Apparently, Whispers enjoy the sound of bagpipes. Don’t ask how that conclusion was made, you’ll just have to try it yourself.
